Autonomous 5G Antenna Positioner – Test Automation in a Global R&D Laboratory

Client Situation

The client is a global manufacturer of 5G antennas. In Poland, they operate one of the largest R&D laboratories, where prototypes of antennas used worldwide are developed and tested.
In the antenna design process, long-term testing under realistic conditions is essential.

One of the key tests involves analyzing communication quality between the antenna and a mobile device (e.g., a smartphone) while their relative positions are changing.

Challenges

For many years, the client relied on a Western supplier specializing in antenna test automation. However, they were seeking an alternative solution that would:

  • be more cost-competitive,
  • offer local service support in Poland,
  • allow flexible feature expansion without high costs,
  • be scalable for multiple test stations.

They also wanted greater control over the solution and shorter lead times for implementing modifications.

Solution

A three-axis manipulator was developed, enabling programmable and long-term testing of 5G antennas under laboratory conditions. The project included:

  • the ability to precisely rotate heavy antenna prototypes,
  • a specialized design minimizing electromagnetic wave reflections,
  • a structure that does not interfere with the electromagnetic field in the test chamber,
  • accurate positioning of antennas relative to mobile devices (transmitters/receivers),
  • high repeatability and operational stability over extended periods.


The designed device met all functional requirements and provided a foundation for easily implementing future structural or functional modifications.
